Description
MERUM Priorati comes, as the name suggests, from the famous yet inhospitable Priorat. The winery is one of the innovators in this rather conventional, traditional region. Merum belongs to the Pere Ventura family , which is best known for their beautiful Cavas. The Merum Priorati logo consists of two ancient symbols for the earth and the sky. And those are exactly the most important factors that you as a winemaker have to deal with when making wine in the rugged Priorat. The soil here consists, to start with, of schist and slate. Feel free to compare it with other top areas such as the Mosel or the Douro valley. And the landscape is hilly. The solution to this is terraced vineyards with very low yields and a lot of manual work.
The Merum Inici is a blend of the common Priorat grapes: Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, Grenache. The grapes are harvested manually in 20 kilogram crates. This way they arrive at the wine company unscathed. The yield is low and is approximately 30 hectoliters per hectare. After the grapes have been destemmed, there is a temperature-controlled fermentation and maceration time in stainless steel of approximately three weeks. This is followed by the second malolactic fermentation (here harder malic acid is converted into softer lactic acid) in 225 liter French oak barrels. After maturing for 8 to 12 months in these 2 and 3 year old barrels, bottling follows without fining and filtering. (All substances contribute to the complexity of the wine. Over time, some sediment may form.
The Merum Inici has a brilliant, bright cherry red color. Lots of red fruit on the nose such as raspberry, blackcurrants and a hint of anise in addition to subtle spicy notes from wood aging. Fresh in the start, well structured and balanced fruity and spicy. Fine and elegant tannins and a juicy, persistent finish.
FACT: Merum Priorato has entered the top 10 in the annual overview of Wine Spectator. The Desti from Merum Priorati ranks no less than 5 in the top 100 of the very best wines.

Some wine regions simply have something extra: Mosel, Côte-Rôtie, Douro. Priorat in Catalonia (Spain) has that too. The similarity between these areas? In all these areas there is extreme viticulture on slopes of weathered slate and schist. It produces beautiful pictures, but making wine in Priorat is not a walk in the park. The landscape demands respect from everyone who works there.
At Merum Priorati, the youngest wine company within the Pere Ventura Family Wine Estates, they are only too happy to have that respect. Because they know that the barren Mediterranean mountain country produces exceptional wines, from (old) Grenache Noir and Carignan, supplemented with Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Powerful wines, with a lot of alcohol, yet elegant and balanced by good acids and ripe tannins.
The absolute confirmation has come in the 2021 annual overview of Wine Spectator, which contains an overview of the 100 best wines in the world. Here the Desti van Merum achieved no less than 5th place in the World's best wine list.
