Château Beychevelle is located at the beginning of the commune of the same name and is the first château you see when you drive into the commune. The castle is magnificent, and was once called the "Versailles du Médoc". In Saint Julien, Beychevelle lived a high-ranking admiral. All ships entering the Gironde had to salute, and did so by lowering their sails "baisser les Voiles". The name "Beychevelle" is said to be derived from this. Since 2011, the castle has changed owners. It is now in the hands of Pierre Castel (of the well-known négociant trader in Bordeaux and elsewhere in France) and of the Japanese group Suntory (also owner of Ch. Lagrange).

Château Beychevelle has the elegance and finesse of the best terroirs of Saint Julien. Graceful and complex, with an enormous aromatic richness, Château Beychevelle is made from the best plots in the undergoes a rigorous selection process and reveals its true nature after about ten years and can be kept for decades, depending on the vintage.

Château Beychevelle had to deal with some frost and a bit of hail this year. Yields were still reasonable with 36 hl/ha this year at Beychevelle. “Our Cabernet is exceptional, but I do think this is the best Merlot we have ever made”, according to technical director Romain Duclomb. The Château Beychevelle Saint-Julien Grand Cru Classé is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, The Château Beychevelle has a bright red/purple color in the glass. It is a generous wine that is surprisingly accessible even at this early stage. The nose offers seductive notes of blackberries, black cherries and dark chocolate. It is an exceptionally harmonious wine. It is both powerful and silky; fresh, fruity and long in the mouth. A fine expression of a Grand Terroir with good freshness and a very pleasant mouthfeel.

Timeless elegance of Château Beychevelle

Château Beychevelle stands as a symbol of tradition and innovation in the heart of Bordeaux, France. This iconic winery, nestled along the serene banks of the Gironde, offers an unparalleled combination of history, culture, and viticultural excellence. Discover the deep roots and flourishing future of this majestic estate.

Château Beychevelle, also known as the 'Versailles of Bordeaux,' has a rich history dating back to 1565, when it was founded by Bishop François of Foix-Candale. Throughout the centuries, the château has had a series of illustrious owners, including the first Duke of Épernon, Jean-Louis Nogaret de la Valette. His influence was so significant that passing ships would lower their sails as a sign of respect, which led to the name Beychevelle, derived from 'Bêcha vêla,' meaning 'lower the sails' in Gascon.

Innovation and sustainability

Château Beychevelle embraces modern techniques while respecting its historical roots. Recent investments have resulted in advanced facilities such as the new cellar opened in 2016. This space utilizes gravity to minimize stress on the wine and allows for plot-by-plot vinification, enabling each grape variety to fully realize its potential. Moreover, the château emphasizes sustainability with an ISO 14001 certification, indicating a serious commitment to environmental awareness.

Men and women of influence

Over the centuries, Château Beychevelle has benefited not only from 'men of power' but also from 'women of taste' who have each made unique contributions to the development of the estate. Figures such as Marie-Amélie Kohn, Madame Guestier, and Madame Heine have shaped the decorative style, hospitality, and beautiful gardens of the château.

The desire to host guests in a beautiful, refined setting is a long-standing tradition at Château Beychevelle. From the enchanting gardens adorned with statues and exotic birds to the modern reception halls, every corner of the château is designed to amaze and welcome visitors. This pursuit of beauty has also been recognized by wine connoisseur Robert Parker, who noted that "the wines of Beychevelle can be as beautiful as its magnificent gardens."

Art & Château Beychevelle

Château Beychevelle has always had a passion for the arts. The château has welcomed artists such as Molière and his troupe of actors, and continues to be a centre for creative expression through the Beychevelle Foundation and partnerships with arts organizations. The château attracts between 15,000 and 20,000 visitors annually and remains a source of inspiration for many.
