Description
Together with the white Pavilion, this is the flagship of the Diamond Collection. Claret is a wine based on Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with other grapes to create a wine in a typical Bordeaux style. The most important grape besides Cabernet (79%) is Petit Verdot, with 15%. Merlot and Cabernet franc, also typical Bordeaux grapes, each account for 3%. Claret is the name that the English gave to red wines from Bordeaux centuries ago, and that they still use – after all, they are English. For this Claret, a label is used that pays tribute to the first Cabernet Sauvignon in a Bordeaux style, made by Gustave Niebaum in 1910. A gold net gives it exactly the same appearance as over 100 years ago. Grapes from various regions in California are used for this wine; in this case from Napa, Sonoma and El Dorado. In this way, a perfect blend is created, in which we find the characteristics of all three of these regions. Napa gives power and depth, Sonoma taste and beautiful acids, El Dorado freshness, juice and elegance. A maturation of 15 months on French oak gives it a beautiful subtle complexity. deeply concentrated fruit with complex aromatics, excellent body, and supple tannins. The color is dark red with beautiful tears in the glass. In the nose we smell beautiful fruit tones of cherries, blackberries a little anise. In the mouth we also taste raspberries & plums. We completely understand that this belongs to the flagship of Coppola. Very balanced with beautiful complex layers.
Francis Ford Coppola (Detroit, April 7, 1939) is an American director, film producer and screenwriter known for The Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now and is considered one of the most important directors in Hollywood. In addition, Francis Ford Coppola has been active in wine growing and trading since the 1970s. In 1975, together with his wife, he bought the estate of the Finnish sea captain Gustave Niebaum in Rutherford, California (located in the famous wine region of Napa Valley) and the surrounding vineyards. That winery is now called the Rubicon Estate Winery. Coppola is also the owner of the Francis Ford Coppola Winery in the Sonoma Valley.
Winemaking has been a long-standing tradition in the Coppola family. Francis Ford Coppola has been making wine even longer than he has been directing films. Grandfather Coppola used to make wine in the cellars of their New York apartment from grapes that had been specially imported from California. The wines that Coppola makes today are no longer the same as those from the cellars in New York, but they are made with the same philosophy. Wines to drink with friends and family.
The parent company of Francis Ford Coppola Winery was named USA Wine Producer of the Year by the International Wine & Spirit Competition on November 16, 2011.
