Description
Sacha Lichine settled in La Motte-en-Provence in 2006 and bought Château d'Esclans from a Swedish family. Sacha is the son of the world-famous winemaker and writer Alexis Lichine. It may sound arrogant, but his goal was to make the best rosé in the world, which could compete with the top Montrachets. To realize this ambition, he left the vinification to Patrick Léon, who was the winemaker of Mouton Rothschild for 23 years, with the result that Whispering Angel, for example, has been sold out in no time for years. At the end of November, Château d'Esclans was elected 'The European Winery of The Year 2014' by the magazine Wine Enthusiast. It is the first time in history that a winery that mainly produces rosé wines has been awarded this 'Oscar for wines'.
The Whispering Angel is internationally one of the most popular rosés and, next to the cult rosé the Garrus, the wine with which Chateau d'Esclans has gained world fame. This rosé owes its name to the chapel on the estate where 2 whispering angels are depicted on the wall. This image is also depicted on the label of the Whispering Angel. The Whispering Angel has the typical light grey-pink colour that characterises a provence rosé. The rosé has an aromatic bouquet, excelling in minerality and elegance. A beautiful glass of wine, elegant, broad and rich with a beautiful freshness and light spiciness. Intense flavour with aromas of apricots, red berries and strawberries.
Methusalem edition of no less than 6 liters in a stunningly beautiful bottle.
The vineyards of Chateau d'Esclans are very favourably situated on a south-westerly location on a clayey and chalky soil. The Garrus is made exclusively from 80 year old Grenache and Rolle vines. The grapes are first tasted, then picked by hand very early in the morning (so that you do not get spontaneous fermentation as a result of the heat) and sorted up to three times for quality. Maceration between 10 and 12 gr. C so that a maximum of fruit is obtained and in addition a selection of pure 'free-run' juice before pressing. A full and eight months Burgundian Batonnage on 600 liter oak barrels which is fully temperature controlled between 12 and 16 gr takes place.
